You may encounter an error saying /opt/local/bin/port failed to initialize macports. There are several ways to solve this problem, we will return to this shortly.

I have updated Mac X OS 10.10 Yosemite to macOS 10.12 Sierra. After that I returned the following specific error related to the MacPorts Ran command:

The problem is that MacPorts is specific to the Mac OS X platform. The best way to solve this problem is to follow the MacPort porting instructions.

Migrate MacPorts provides the restore_ports.tcl package for restoring all grids (that is, individual packages) for which you upgraded MacPorts. However, I decided to start from scratch and maybe install the necessary ports.

Note. I’ve noticed that executables like with (from the SVN subversion port) are left in /usr/bin and can still be converted to usable ones. You

  • If you decide to keep the existing best ports and use the restore_ports.tcl script, consider removing inactive packages:

    1. Install or update to the latest Xcode Developer Tools (free from the Mac App Store) and run it once.
    2. Install, I would say, the latest command line development methods that run this command in a terminal application:
    3. Download and install the MacPorts package for your Mac OS accountX. It will overwrite the active MacPorts installation.

The new MacPorts contractor will not modify the existing configuration file, you must update it manually. The updated macports.conf.default configuration is located in the /opt/local/etc/macports directory. The old “macports.conf” configuration directory is also in the same location.

Before replacing the old file with the new one, I recommend a better file comparison:

Note. If you prefer a beautiful graphical user interface, you can use FileMerge, which is derived from Xcode. Just run FileMerge and enter the paths of these two files to compare them.

There was almost no significant difference between the two files (apart from the comments), but I foresaw and replaced the old file with the new one.

Note. There are 3 more MacPorts configuration files, “variants.conf” or “sources.conf” that are not mentioned in the migration guide. I compared them well and the only significant difference I found was in “sources.conf” where the meaning of “rsync” was different. I replaced “sources.conf” with something to make sure everything is updated fine.

If you haven’t done much, you need tobe clean to follow the migration instructions on how to run the restore_ports.tcl script.

The MacPorts installation I installed on Yosemite does not work with El Capitan because it is not yet supported. I want to filter the setting of ports here, but I can’t run commands attached to ports. Does anyone currently know how to clear this?

When I run the port command I get the following error:
